Genre Focus: Setting Description 

  

Lesson 1: Setting Description: Reading Comprehension - Fact Retrieval 

For this lesson, watch the video and use the buttons on the bottom of the screen navigate between activities. When you have listened to the input, answer the questions in your exercise books. Then, play the video again to check your answers. At the end of the lesson, complete the quiz to see how well you have done! 

  

Lesson 2: Setting Description: Reading Comprehension - Fact Retrieval 

Listen carefully to the input in the video and follow the same structure as yesterday’s lesson. 

  

Lesson 3: Setting Description: Identifying the features of a text 

Listen carefully to the input in the video. During the independent task, write your answers in your exercise book (don’t worry about the worksheet). It may help you to number your answers for the text features. When you have finished, go back to the video to check your answers. 

  

Lesson 4: Setting Description: SPaG focus: Parenthesis 

Listen carefully to the input in the video and carefully review how to use brackets, dashes and commas for parenthesis. Complete the task in your exercise books and then check the video for answers. 

  

Lesson 5: Setting Description: Write a setting description 

Listen carefully to the input in the video. Today you will be writing your own setting description. Listen and pause the video to give yourself time to plan the sections of your description. Use the WAGOLL and the sentences you drafted in lesson 4 to help you. When you have finished, edit your writing carefully. Teachers would love you to ask parents send these to year group emails. Please do not upload any of your work online to any social media sites.

Friday’s lesson is the Family Challenge. The activity is on the same page as the learning videos, or you can find it on the BBC Bitesize Year 5 page. The most suitable questions for Year 5 are 1 to 5 but why not try the others with someone at home!

Key question: How is igneous rock formed? 

In this lesson you will be finding out how igneous rocks are formed linking to the structure of the earth. 

Before you start the lesson talk about:  Where do rocks come from? What do you think is below the surface of the earth?  How old is the earth and when did it form?

The worksheet provides a guide through each lesson’s tasks.  If you do not wish to print it out, tasks can be completed on paper or in a notebook. 

 

 

Health & Safety: During the video you will see an experiment being carried out.  If you wish to replicate the experiment please make sure you have adult supervision and the hair is tied back, sleeves firmly rolled up and if possible, goggles to cover eyes.  Please make sure all flames are extinguished by pouring over cold water.

Lesson 1: Who was Siddhartha Gautama?  

 

In this lesson we will be learning about Siddhartha Gautama. He is the first individual to have achieved enlightenment through the practice of meditation. He became known as Buddha, which means ‘the enlightened one’. We will learn about his life and his journey to enlightenment. 

You will need a pen or pencil and your exercise book to completed this lesson. Pause the lesson when the teachers tells you to and start it again when you have completed the task.

Examples suitable for children of any age 

Create some art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy.  

Create your own picture or pattern with natural materials by and using things you find. Go on a walk or look in your garden or other outdoor space. Gather some small items together – leaves, petals, grasses, pebbles. (Don’t break bits off of trees or plants please!) Find a suitable space at home or outdoors. Arrange your items to make a pattern or picture. Take photos of your work to share.

Term 5

English - Week 5

We always encourage all children to read at home and we know many of you have many lovely books to read. In order for your child to continue being able to read book banded reading books selected at their level of reading ability, your child now has an account with Bug Club https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login?c=0 where they have been allocated reading books based on their book band or reading age. They have books to read in ‘My Stuff’ and then after completing all of the activities based on the books, they will go into ‘My Library’ to read. Please use our pupil guide below to help you navigate Bug Club. You should have received their username and password through an announcement on Class Charts (the school code is popr). If you have not received this, or have trouble accessing the site, please email your child's year group address.

We recommend reading 1 or 2 books a week rather than racing ahead - quality reading rather than quantity will help you improve your reading more. The first reading should focus on decoding, the second reading will focus on comprehension and completing the activities and try some reading with prosody (intonation, pitch and expression) for a few pages too when you read aloud.

Home learning packs are also available from the Hamilton Trust https://www.hamilton-trust.org.uk/blog/learning-home-packs/

Each pack contains 5 days of mixed reading, grammar, spelling and writing opportunities, planned around a weekly theme. Some days contain a lot of activities so please don't feel pressured to complete everything. Notes for parents and carers are included, as well as sheets which can be printed for children to work on. However, this is not essential and written responses could be recorded on paper, in a notebook, or typed.

Maths

Daily Maths lessons are provided through White Rose Maths https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/ which is a high-quality resource we use in school. For Years 1-6, each lesson video starts with a 'Flashback' to review prior learning, then a short tutorial video with example questions which are fully explained.

Follow-up worksheets can be downloaded below, although again, if you don't have access to a printer, these can be completed on paper. Answers are also provided so you can talk through your child's work and help them if they get stuck. For Early Years, each week is based around a story book but you don't need to have the book to do the activity.

Please also remind your child to practice their times tables recall frequently using Times Tables Rock Stars. Well done messages and house points are sent to the top 3 children in each Key Stage every Friday and many teachers set their own challenges and rewards for effort. If your child doesn't have their log-in details, please email their year group address for help.
