Learning and achieving together
Year 5 Spring Terms 3 and  4
2012

Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! Welcome back after the busy Christmas period.  Please find attached a summary of the main learning areas this term and below are some reminders for you. HomeworkChildren should be completing Literacy, Topic or Maths homework weekly.  Homework will usually be given on a Thursday/Friday and returned by a Tuesday.  Usually there will be an explanation sheet stuck into your child’s homework book.  It would be so useful if we could have a parental comment so we know how your child got on with their homework.  Homework diaries need to be signed at the end of each week and will be checked by the teacher.  Do comment in the diary about any aspect of the week, not just about homework.

In Year 5 children need to read for at least 10 minutes every school night.  They need to complete their reading record each time they read. We would very much appreciate you listening to/discussing your child’s reading at least twice a week and on these occasions for you to sign in your child’s reading record book.

In addition, children are required to practise times table and division facts to aid rapid recall.  Every week there will be an informal check as part of the maths lesson.  Children may like to practise their maths skills by logging onto The Zone website where they’ll find maths games to play that coincide with the learning that they’re doing at school.

P.EMacArthur Class: Thursdays and Fridays

Armstrong Class: Mondays and Thursdays

Please ensure that your children have the appropriate clothing and footwear in school for these lessons – a white t-shirt, navy/black shorts and daps/trainers.

Wider Educational OpportunitiesAs part of North Somerset’s Wider Music Opportunities, all Year 5 children are learning to play the trumpet. Lessons are on Monday afternoon and all children are required to bring in their trumpet for that session.  There is the expectation that children will practise their trumpet for 5 minutes every school night.

Thank you

The Year 5 Team,
Mrs Hayes, Miss Powell and Miss Gilmour
