Y3 TERMLY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS – Terms 5 and 6 2012


Dear Parents and Carers,
Please find below details of the curricular topics which your child will be studying this term. You may be able to help by lending resources in some of the topic areas.  You may even feel that you could help in class or know someone with expertise who could contribute to the term’s work.  Please contact your child’s teacher with any offers of help.
Science:
Alive and Kicking: The skeleton and its function.  Broken bones. How muscles work. Experiments connected to bone size. Animals/mini-beasts and different types of skeletons- internal, external and no skeleton. Habitats and what animals/plants live in each and why. Features of mini-beasts and their needs. Creating habitats for given mini-beasts. Work on food chains and associated vocabulary. Plants that give us food. How plants grow well and experiments to find out how varying conditions influence plant growth. Growing of own plant and diary of growth. Function of the leaves, roots and stem.

Geography:
Will link to the Alive and Kicking topic and focus on different climatic zones that create different habitats for animals. Use will be made of maps and atlases on a variety of scales. Children will learn to map features and produce keys. Children will explore geographical issues through role-play, such as, how humans affect rain forests.

Art and Design Technology:
Art:  Close observational drawings/paintings of mini-beasts and plants. Use of sketch books in the school locality. Collages to show habitats of living things.
DT: The designing and making of an electronic bouncing bug.

PE:
A range of activities including skills and games involving striking and fielding. Athletic activities leading to sports day.  Dance and gymnastics.

RE:
What’s it to like to be a Christian and the life and teachings of Jesus - how they relate to Christian life, practices, celebrations and the pattern of Christian festivals.

Music:
Singing in a variety of styles.

ICT:
Introduction to databases: Collecting and storing information. Setting up a database. Creating charts and graphs from data continued.
 Exploring simulations: Children will make choices, recognise patterns and test predictions.
Also, cross curricular ICT related to the Alive and Kicking topic.

Additional learning opportunities
We will be arranging some trips and talks connected to our topic of Alive and Kicking.
Children will continue to learn French.
