Come into our Garden
Here at Portishead Primary we are lucky enough to have our own school garden and, over the last year, lots of our children have enjoyed the opportunity to be outside, getting their hands dirty and making things grow.
Together, we have planted bulbs, grown flowers, herbs, runner beans, potatoes, strawberries, blackcurrants and tomatoes. The children have happily sown seed, planted, watered, weeded and harvested their produce. They have also proved to be keen bug detectives! Their huge enthusiasm and impressive knowledge when working in the garden has been a great joy to see.
We are very grateful to the parents and members of Portishead in Bloom who regularly come and support us with our garden. Gardening club usually meets on a Thursday from 11.00am until 2.00 pm. If you have green fingers and are able to support this group in any way then please let the school office know.

At Portishead Primary School we played our part in the Portishead in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions. We were pleased to welcome the judges to see the school gardens and were very proud of the work that has been achieved throughout the year.
In 2010 Portishead in Bloom have won Gold again in the South West Regional Finals and the St Bridget cup. In the National Finals they won Silver Gilt and were runners up to the City of London in the Britain in Bloom Sustainable Landscaping Award.
News from Portishead in Bloom
One Portishead in Bloom volunteer helps at Portishead Primary School’s Gardening Club on a regular basis. Plans have been made to re-design the ‘secret garden’ behind the ‘Whale Wall’ at the school and use the raised beds at the rear of the school for vegetable growing. Some parents who are regular volunteers assisted a member of staff and the volunteer from P in B to transfer some of the perennial plants from the raised beds to the ‘Secret Garden’. Although a great deal of soil improver and compost has been dug into this area over time, the conditions there are not really that conducive to vegetable growing. The raised beds should be easier for the children to maintain.
On a visit to HOMEBASE that afternoon, our P in B volunteer received a donation of much needed childrens’ gardening gloves, packets of seeds (flowers and vegetables) and a much needed rake. We are so grateful to HOMEBASE for continuing to support Portishead Primary School’s Gardening Club. A big ‘thank you’ to HOMEBASE from the children and Portishead in Bloom.
