One of the first tasks our volunteers undertook this month was to weed the Wild Flower meadow situated on the left hand side of Wyndham Way approaching the town. This may seem a rather strange thing to do, but even wild flower meadows need to be maintained. Back in the Autumn we planted over 100 blue and cream Camassias which were glorious at the beginning of May. Whilst removing the dandelions we planted Ox-eye daisies donated to us by a member of the public. Other volunteers tidied the ‘boat’ roundabout which is a spectacular entrance to Portishead and one that always impresses the RHS Judges.

May 5 Four members of Portishead in Bloom completed the planting of the Lion’s Rose bed with blue Agapanthus, Nepeta and Campanulas to complement the 40 yellow roses which were planted in March. The shrubs near the newly constructed wall are looking healthy and will act as a windbreak as they mature, to help protect the plants in the main flowerbed.

May 22 Plant Sale As one of the first major fund raising events to be held this year we were hoping for good support from the community. Situated outside Iceland Store in the Precinct we had a fantastic response! The weather was perfect for the event and hundreds of summer bedding plants were sold very quickly to enthusiastic gardeners. Our grateful thanks must go to the Manager of Iceland who allows us to use the site outside his store every year.

NOW FOR AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED!!
OPEN GARDENS WEEKEND - 2010
This year’s Open Gardens Weekend will take place on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th June from 10.30a.m. to 5.00p.m. There will be 18 local and
varied gardens to view around Portishead. Programmes cost £4 which covers entry to all the gardens for the whole weekend. A real bargain! These can now
be purchased from Season Florists, Morgan Westley and 45 Nore Road. Or contact the Chairman, Sandy Tebbutt on 01275 843566. Look out for the posters on the Community Noticeboards and various locations around the town.
Refreshments will be served in some gardens. Come and enjoy delicious lunches and teas, or browse around an Art Exhibition which is being held in one of the gardens. There will be plant sales, book and charity stalls and raffles.
Iron work will be on show and can be purchased from the designer herself.
We do hope this event will be well supported, so please tell your friends about it. This is our biggest fund raising effort of the year (in 2009 we raised over £3000 and the weather was appalling!) We are really hoping to beat that figure this year. All money raised will be used to continue Portishead in Bloom’s work throughout the year. The latest news – as an extra attraction, live jazz will be played in Martin and Ann Sterland’s garden at 53 Nore Road from 2.00p.m. each afternoon.

Portishead Primary School Gardens
We have a gardening group which consists of school staff who work together with parents and members of the community and children who are busy growing lots of plants and vegetables around the school grounds. If you have green fingers and are able to support this group in any way then please let the school office know.
