NSPCC
Fantastic team work resulted in all the children at Portishead Primary School helping to raise over £2000 by doing spelling activities and tests. The money was much needed by the NSPCC in order to help all children who need help and support. The child line number 0800 1111 provides help and advice and someone for children to talk to when needed.
Healthy Schools Status
We have now been awarded the Healthy Schools Status. Some of the peer mentors attended the Healthy Schools Celebration lunch at the Winter Gardens and received the award. They told children and adults from other schools about the work that they had been doing and they found out some new ideas that they would like to try in school.
The MacMillan Coffee Morning
We raised £722.43 during our big coffee money in support of MacMillan nurses. Many thanks to everyone who helped this fantastic and worthy charity.
The School Garden
The school garden was awarded a Royal Horticultural Society merit in the National neighbourhood awards. Portishead in Bloom received a gold award in the South West. Congratulations and many thanks go to Mrs Atherton who worked so hard in the school garden.
Noscars 2009
Portishead Primary School was shortlisted for their KS2 entry in the NOSCARs 2009. Over sixty schools entered and twenty four schools were shortlisted. We were one of nine schools in the key stage two category. We did not win a prize this time but we all had a lovely time and were proud to be shortlisted. We are already thinking about our next entries!
Romany Wood Concert
Children in year 5 took part in the Romany Wood Concert at the Winter Gardens.
Walk to school week
North Somerset Council have introduced a ‘School Travel Health Check’ for all schools in North Somerset using submitted travel data. They analyse how the children travel to school and results for 2008/9 show that we have a ‘Green’ school status! This is the highest status and shows that our school’s carbon footprint total per pupil CO2 =more than 10% below the North Somerset average. Average emitted per pupil = 50.2kg a year. Average for North Somerset pupil = 84.8 kg a year. Out of the 78 North Somerset Schools we were overall 30th. This is an excellent achievement as only 45% of the school travel by car. This is due to the very high percentage of children who walk to school despite living beyond the average ‘walk threshold’ of 80m from the school boundary. If any parents or carers are interested in seeing the specific results please see Mrs Perry (Y6) for a copy of the report.
